The Association de Sauvegarde de l'Église Saint-Hilaire de Norgeat invites all residents, visitors, researchers, and families to participate in our rich program of free, open-access public events throughout 2026. From participatory masonry work camps to guided architectural discoveries, experience living Pyrenean heritage firsthand.
Public Utility & Free Access Policy
In accordance with our statutes under the French Law of July 1, 1901, all gatherings, guided tours, and lectures organized by our association are entirely free of admission fees. We believe that cultural heritage is a common good belonging to all citizens. While pre-registration is recommended for volunteer work camps to coordinate safety equipment and collective meals, financial contribution is never required.
Annual Ordinary General Assembly & Civic Heritage Forum
Venue: Salle Communale de Miglos (Village de Capoulet / Mairie) & On-Site Tour at Saint-Hilaire de Norgeat.
The sovereign annual meeting of our association brings together active members, institutional partners, municipal delegates, and interested local residents. President Claire Duval will present the 2025 Moral Report, followed by Treasurer Marc Fontanier's detailed financial audit of expenditures and grants. Vice-President Pierre Delmas will detail the Phase 1 technical masonry achievements and unveil the planned 2026 restoration campaigns.
The meeting includes the democratic election of the Board of Directors, a formal voting session on upcoming budgetary allocations, and an open floor discussion where citizens can propose historical research topics and community initiatives. Following the assembly, attendees are invited to an on-site architectural tour of the church and a friendly reception featuring traditional Ariège specialties.
Printemps Roman: Architectural Guided Walk & Vernacular Stone Discovery
Starting Point: Place du Village de Norgeat (Fountain & Communal Oven). Moderate walking on village stone paths.
Celebrate the return of spring in the Vicdessos valley with an in-depth architectural and botanical walk. Led by heritage guide Sylvie Rameau and local historian Laurent Vignaux, this 3-hour journey explores the subtle relationships between mountain topography, medieval settlement patterns, and sacred architecture.
Participants will examine ancient schist dry-stone terraces, discover centuries-old parish boundary stones, and explore the exterior and interior architectural features of Saint-Hilaire de Norgeat. Special focus will be given to the mechanics of the western bell-gable (clocher-mur) and the stonecutters' marks visible on the eastern apse masonry. The visit concludes with an outdoor demonstration of natural lime slaking and traditional mortar preparation.
Grand Chantier Bénévole Estival: Lime Mortar Repointing & Drainage Restoration
Location: Church of Saint-Hilaire de Norgeat grounds. Full safety gear, scaffolding, and meals provided by the association.
Our flagship annual volunteer work camp brings together heritage enthusiasts, students, and local residents for six days of intensive, hands-on conservation under the direct guidance of professional master masons. During this 2026 summer campaign, teams will focus on:
- Meticulous manual raking and cleaning of deteriorated joint mortar along the southern elevation;
- Formulation and deep application of traditional natural hydraulic lime mortar (NHL 2) with local sands;
- Rebuilding 20 linear meters of collapsed dry-stone perimeter retaining walls lining the church access ramp;
- Realignment and copper hook stabilization of Pyrenean roof slates on the lower eaves.
No prior masonry experience is necessary; all participants receive comprehensive safety instruction and practical mentorship. Communal lunches are prepared daily featuring local produce, fostering immense camaraderie. Volunteers may participate for a single day, several days, or the entire week.
Journées Européennes du Patrimoine 2026: "Living Routes, Networks & Connections"
Location: Church of Saint-Hilaire de Norgeat and Village Square. Free continuous guided tours every hour.
In nationwide celebration of the 43rd European Heritage Days, the Association de Sauvegarde opens the doors of Saint-Hilaire for an unforgettable weekend of cultural immersion centered on the official theme of historic networks and human connections across Pyrenean valleys:
- Continuous Guided Tours (10:00 to 18:00): Departures every hour on the hour, exploring Romanesque art, liturgical symbols, and the medieval iron trade routes connecting Norgeat with the Catalan slopes.
- Temporary Archival Exhibition: Display of newly discovered seventeenth-century parish terriers, historic photographs from 1890 to 1960, and high-resolution architectural elevation drawings.
- Children's Heritage Workshop: Interactive stone carving and fresco painting workshops using natural mineral pigments, supervised by certified art educators.
- Acoustic Romanesque Concert (Saturday at 17:30): A twilight performance of medieval Occitan troubadour music and polyphonic vocal chants by the Pyrenean vocal ensemble Voci d'Arieja, demonstrating the exceptional acoustic resonance of the nave vault.
Rencontres Historiques d'Automne: Parish Records, Terriers & Village Testimonies
Venue: Salle Municipale de Miglos. Open to all citizens and researchers.
As the mountain autumn settles over the Vicdessos valley, our archival research commission presents the fruits of its twelve-month investigation into the historical archives of Foix and Toulouse. General Secretary Élisabeth Martin and guest Pyrenean researchers will present illustrated lectures detailing the evolution of parish boundaries, the ancient rights of pastoral commonage, and the oral testimonies collected from elder residents of Norgeat. The conference concludes with a warm debate and chestnut tasting.
School Field Trips, University Research Groups & Pedagogical Bookings
Throughout the school year, our association collaborates with primary schools, middle schools (collèges), high schools (lycées), and university departments from across the Academy of Toulouse and Occitanie region. We offer customized, curriculum-aligned pedagogical visits centered on medieval history, Pyrenean geography, and the physical chemistry of historical building materials.
Students engage directly with primary source documents, learn to decipher Romanesque mason marks, observe lime mortar carbonation under magnifying loupes, and explore the social roles of medieval mountain communities. In alignment with our non-profit public educational mission, all school and university visits are provided entirely free of charge. Teachers and educational coordinators are invited to contact our pedagogical lead, Sylvie Rameau, at least three weeks in advance to prepare customized worksheets and coordinate site logistics.
Ecological Mountain Etiquette & Site Preservation Charter
The village of Norgeat and its surrounding natural amphitheater are fragile mountain environments. We ask all visitors and event participants to adhere strictly to our site preservation etiquette:
- Zero Waste Mandate: Norgeat has no municipal trash collection on historical pedestrian paths. Please take all waste, food wrappers, and bottles back with you.
- Respect for Living Dry-Stone: Please do not climb on historical terrace retaining walls or remove loose stones. These structures represent hundreds of hours of delicate volunteer craftsmanship and serve as habitats for protected fauna.
- Preservation of Tranquility: Norgeat is a peaceful living residential hamlet. Please respect the quietude of local residents and park exclusively in marked arrival areas.
Visitor Guidelines, Mountain Access & Practical Advice
Visiting Saint-Hilaire de Norgeat is an authentic mountain experience. To ensure your visit is safe and pleasant, please note the following recommendations:
- Access by Road: From Tarascon-sur-Ariège, take the D8 toward Vicdessos. At Capoulet-et-Junac, follow the D24 up toward Miglos, then take the Route de Pijol to the village of Norgeat (09400). Mountain roads are narrow; please exercise defensive driving.
- Parking: A designated visitor parking area is situated at the village entrance. Motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited within the historic pedestrian alleyways leading to the church to preserve fragile stone pavements.
- Footwear & Attire: Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are strongly recommended due to uneven medieval cobbles and mountain gradients. Weather in the Pyrenees can change rapidly; bring a windbreaker and adequate water.
- Accessibility: The interior of the church is accessible via a ramp, but the ancient approach paths feature moderate slopes. Volunteers are on hand during all public events to assist visitors with reduced mobility.
