Access Routes & Geographical Navigation to Norgeat

The hamlet of Norgeat is nestled on the eastern heights of the Vicdessos valley at an altitude of approximately 780 meters. Accessing the site requires following mountain roadways with care:

From Foix & Tarascon-sur-Ariège

From Foix, take the dual-carriageway N20 south to Tarascon-sur-Ariège (approximately 15 km). At Tarascon, exit onto the D8 departmental road heading toward Vicdessos and Auzat. Travel approximately 7 km through the valley narrows to the village of Capoulet-et-Junac. Turn left onto the D24 signposted toward Miglos and Norgeat. Ascend the winding mountain road (Route de Pijol) for 3.5 km until you reach the village sign of Norgeat.

From Toulouse & Pamiers

From Toulouse, take the A66 motorway south toward Pamiers, which connects seamlessly to the N20 through Foix. Continue past Foix to Tarascon-sur-Ariège, then follow the D8 and D24 into the commune of Miglos. Total driving time from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport is approximately one hour and twenty-five minutes.

Public Transit & Mountain Rail: The nearest SNCF passenger rail station is Gare de Tarascon-sur-Ariège, served regularly by TER Occitanie trains on the Toulouse-Matabiau to Latour-de-Carol/Enveitg line. From the Tarascon station, regional on-demand bus services (liO Ariège) connect to Capoulet-et-Junac, from which walking paths ascend to Norgeat.

No prior experience is necessary! Our participatory conservation camps welcome people of all skill levels and physical abilities. Experienced masons and team leaders provide comprehensive hands-on instruction in every task, from manual mortar mixing to dry-stone leveling and site clearing. Additionally, we have numerous non-manual volunteer roles, such as document digitization, photography, event hosting, and catering for work teams.

How does the association coordinate with the Municipality of Miglos?

Under French legislation governing historical ecclesiastical properties (Law of December 9, 1905), the physical building of Saint-Hilaire belongs to the communal domain of the Mairie de Miglos. Our association operates under a formal partnership convention with the Municipal Council, which authorizes our technical diagnostics, scaffolding installation, and volunteer restoration interventions while ensuring full municipal alignment.

Can regional schools and youth groups organize educational field trips?

Yes! We actively encourage school groups from across Ariège and Occitanie. Our pedagogical director prepares customized, age-appropriate educational workshops on Romanesque art, medieval social history, and traditional building sciences.
